My Best Refutation Ever

6 11 2007

paradise2.jpgOver the past few years, I’ve spent disproportionate amounts of time debating online in internet forums and mailing lists, arguing this and that, and I’m pretty sure most of it was time wasted.

This past week, I was accused by a certain individual on an internet mailing list of propagating racism towards South Asians due to an ad we ran for an AlMaghrib class.  I thanked him for his advice, responded to his points, and requested that if he wanted to continue the discussion further, he could email me privately and we could continue the discussion.

Chain of Command Friday Night GEMS!

27 10 2007

Alhamdullillaah, today we’ve begun Chain of Command:  The Sciences of Hadeeth with Shaykh AbdulBary Yahya, and I have to say, there’s something about the way that Shaykh AbdulBary teaches that really causes my Eman to soar =D  Here are some GEMs from yesterday’s class:

1.  Following the Sunnah vs Avoiding It
When the Companions would learn that something was from the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa sallim, their reaction was to practice it right away. Today, when many of us hear that something is from the Sunnah, we say, “Oh, that’s just recommended, I don’t have to do it.”

Authority of Sunnah: Qur’ânic Proofs

1 01 1990

Shaykh Jamâl al-Dîn M. Zarabozo in his book The Authority and Importance of the Sunnah laid out in the appendix 50 sets of verses from the Qur’ân which proved the authority and importance of the Sunnah. When beginning a discussion such as this with someone skeptical of hadîth, one should begin with the Qur’ân when holding such a discussion because to use hadîth (or the sunnah) when initiating such a discussion would be to use circular reasoning - it is that very thing whose authenticity and importance is in dispute, so it cannot initially be used to prove it’s own relevance. Once the Qur’ânic proofs are discussed and accepted, it is then possible to move on to use the hadîth of the Prophet sallallâhu alayhi wa sallim to continue the discussion.  What follows below are the ayahs one can use in their discussion:

A Discussion of Authenticity

1 01 1990

An interesting discussion took place on the AlMaghrib forums regarding the authenticity of a specific hadith which, if authentic, condemns the practice of group dhikr.  The discussion started with the hadith quoted, followed by a response written elsewhere by one shaykh, and then the response by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi.  The discussion has been reproduced below:

Hadith Scholars and their Aqidah

1 01 1990

Question:
In general, did scholars specializing in hadith after the first three generations participate in theological discourse, and if so, can we find a difference in their beliefs corresponding to that of the fiqh schools, or were they more impervious to deviance than scholars of other specialties?

Answered by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi
Hadeeth always had a more orthodoxizing effect on those who studied it. Hence, you will not find any major scholar of kalaam who was also a famous scholar of hadeeth. There are many later muhadithoon who were raised in an environment of kalaam (starting with al-Bayhaqi, and later with al-Nawawi and Ibn Hajar, the two most famous luminaries always quoted by the people of kalaam as their main representatives - and how we wish they were all like them!!), but none of them were theologians, or wrote works on kalaam. Both al-Nawawi and Ibn Hajar have positions that go against standard kalaam theology, and this is due to the barakah of their knowledge and intimacy with the sunnah.
