Question: Who are the Qaramitah?
Answered by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi
The Qaramitah (transliterate them as you will) are a heretical group of Sevener Shi`ites who had an informal relationship with the Fatimids but were not controlled by them. They were the only group in the history of the Ummah who had the ignoble ‘honor’ of ransacking the Ka`bah, stuffing the Well of Zamzam with the bodies of murdered hujjaj, and of stealing the Black Stone and holding it hostage for almost 3 decades, until the Fatimids intervened and negotiated with them its release back to the Ka`bah. They were very political and militant, feared by the masses and hated by the Caliphs. They were also strongly influenced by Manichean theology.
